What is going on in DRC?
In the DRC East, Uvira Health Zone of South Kivu, children and youth with disabilities face deep-rooted exclusion. Despite national laws promoting inclusion, stigma, poverty, and inaccessible services keep many hidden at home, out of school, and without care. Girls with disabilities are especially vulnerable—often denied autonomy, education, and protection. Recent instability in South Kivu has further increased insecurity for children and families in the Uvira area.
Facts and figures
- 71% of youth with disabilities needed medical care last year but didn’t receive it.
- 52% who needed mobility aids lack access to appropriate devices.
- 39% of youth with a disability have never completed a year of school.
Our work in DRC
In DRC East (Uvira), Liliane Fonds supports the Muungano Tegemeza network—six local organisations working across health, education, livelihoods, social inclusion, and empowerment. Through community-based rehabilitation (CBR), we focus on inclusive education, psychosocial support, vocational training, and SRHR. We strengthen local capacity and advocate for disability rights to ensure services are truly inclusive and accessible through CBR.
