Government of Rwanda recognises the importance of inclusive development

The support for children and young people with disabilities in Rwanda will receive a strong and sustainable boost. The Rwandan government recently decided to recognize the guidelines for Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID).

This means that the Rwandan government officially includes the Community-Based Rehabilitation approach (CBR) in its policy and takes responsibility for implementing this strategy and (co-)finances it.

This is a clear and successful example of our focus on the durable strengthening of healthcare systems. By working together on strong structures and policies, we work both on better support for children with disabilities today, and on sustainable change that also benefits future generations.

The government recognition follows a successful campaign by our national partner in Rwanda, NUDOR. Together with a group of international organisations, it lobbied intensively for this, as part of the Community-Based Rehabilitation project that Liliane Fonds has been financing in Rwanda for several years.

The government decision is an important milestone on the road to equal rights and treatment of people with disabilities in Rwanda. It makes our joint programmes with NUDOR more sustainable and future-proof, easier to scale up and helps to tailor and expand support through collaboration across sectors. This strengthens inclusive development at the community level.

In addition, the recognition also contributes to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on ensuring that no one is left behind in their development.
