Child development

Equal rights and opportunities

Our support

Child Development, to us, means addressing the child’s impairment, improving their living standards, and making them resilient and confident in their abilities. We make it easier for them to participate and stand up for themselves. We do this by increasing their access to support services and health care, creating inclusive education and a better livelihood, organising social activities, and advocating for political support and empowerment.

The starting point for our support is always the situation, the character, and the needs of each child individually. The parents or guardians play a central role in our engagement and support.

UN Convention and Sustainable Development goals

To achieve structural improvement, we encourage policy changes. Almost all countries where our partners are active, have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Together with our local partners we challenge governments on their commitment and unite parents, care takers and children so that their voices are heard.
Most governments have also agreed to work towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In our work we focus on five themes that are consistent with these goals. This enables us to achieve structural and sustainable changes for the better in the lives of children with disabilities and their families.

  • Rehabilitation and care

The Liliane Foundation believes that (re)habilitation is an important step to identifying and addressing the needs of children with a disability and their families. The sooner they can start to (re)habilitate, the better the chances of equal opportunities and social inclusion within their communities.

  • Inclusive education

50% of all children with a disability in low- and middle-income countries are out of school. That is why the Liliane Foundation stresses the importance of inclusive education and is pushing to change these figures. We promote good quality and inclusive education for all children.

  • Sustainable livelihood

The Liliane Foundation aims for youngsters with disabilities to gain a sustainable livelihood. They should have access to social protection measures and have decent work and income. With this income, they should be able to contribute economically to their families and communities and meet their disability needs.

  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

Children and young people with disabilities in developing countries are like all other young people: they dream about relationships and maybe even about a family of their own. That is why we stress the importance of access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for young people with a disability.
