What is going on in Sierra Leone?
Sierra Leone has strong legal commitments to disability rights, but children and youth with disabilities remain excluded. Services are fragmented and under-resourced, especially in rural districts. Poverty, stigma and limited awareness are widespread. Without reliable data, early identification and sustained investment, children with disabilities remain invisible to systems meant to support and protect them.
Facts and figures
- 1 in 5 people with disabilities are children
- 1.8% of people with disabilities are formally employed
- 63% of people with disabilities above age 3 have never attended school
- Only 10% of schools have ramps or accessibility features
- 40% of people with disabilities face barriers to rehabilitation services
Our work in Sierra Leone
Liliane Fonds works with OneFamilyPeople and other local partners to reach children and youth with disabilities in Sierra Leone. Our focus is on early identification, healthcare, home-based rehabilitation and family support. We strengthen inclusive schools and youth skills development, while supporting advocacy for better disability data and stronger policy implementation.
