What is going on in Kenya?
Kenya recently passed the Disability Act 2025, guaranteeing education, healthcare, employment, and public services for persons with disabilities. Despite this, children and youth with disabilities are often excluded, especially in rural areas where assistive devices, inclusive schools, and rehabilitation services are limited. Stigma and fragmented systems further isolate families and girls face double barriers in education and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Facts and figures
- 1 in 3 children with disabilities finish basic education
- Assistive devices are unaffordable and rarely available
- No national system for rehabilitation referrals
- Most schools are physically inaccessible
Our work in Kenya
In Kenya, we partner with Cheshire Disability Services Kenya (CDSK) to reach children and youth with disabilities through community-based rehabilitation (CBR). Our work prioritises inclusive education, access to assistive technology, SRHR and empowerment of caregivers and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPD’s).
We focus on under-resourced rural areas and advocate for systemic change at local and national levels. By strengthening disability networks, we help drive coordinated, inclusive programming that responds directly to lived realities.
