Youth with disabilities often face challenges that affect their wellbeing far beyond school or work. Feelings of loneliness, low self-esteem, internalised stigma and the impact of trauma are common realities. At Liliane Fonds, we believe that strengthening social and emotional skills is essential for participation, confidence and future opportunities. Together with partners in Kenya and Tanzania who are implementing the Kazi na maisha bora (KMB) or Work and Better Life project, we developed a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) approach that places youth with disabilities at the centre and builds on their strengths and lived experiences.
Our SEL programme is based on peer learning and aligned with the internationally recognised CASEL framework. It is delivered in small groups of up to 20 youth with disabilities, guided by trained facilitators. The programme consists of 21 structured SEL sessions, organised in modules using the metaphor of a tree. All sessions are clearly described in our Social Emotional Learning Facilitator Manual, available in English and French, and designed to be practical, participatory and safe for group learning.
