Zambia stands up for people with albinism
With the official ratification of the National Action Plan, Zambia has taken an important step toward equal opportunities for Persons with Albinism.
This action plan gives a strong boost to their rights and position in society. It contributes to better protection and ensures that persons with albinism can participate equally.
This is urgently needed. People with albinism in Zambia still face discrimination and social exclusion due to persistent stigma and prejudice, sometimes with fatal consequences. In addition, a lack of access to essential care and resources, such as sunscreen, puts them at significantly higher risk of developing skin cancer.
Protection and cooperation
By signing the National Action Plan and taking responsibility for its implementation, the Zambian government commits to protecting the rights of persons with albinism. The action plan will be fully integrated into government policy and led by the government. Together with our project partners Cheshire Homes Society of Zambia (CHSZ) and the Africa Albinism Network (AAN), we will continue to raise awareness about the position of persons with albinism, including through a media campaign.
This achievement results from effective collaboration between the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, CHSZ, AAN and Liliane Fonds.
Out of the shadows project
The Action Plan stems from our collaboration with CHSZ and AAN in the project ‘Out of the Shadows for Good’, made possible by an additional contribution from the Dutch Postcode Lottery. Through this project, we are working to structurally improve the position of persons with albinism by:
- Raising awareness and providing direct support in the community, such as medical checks, distributing sunscreen and supporting school enrolment
- Strengthening cooperation with local organisations that advocate for the rights of people with albinism
- Enhancing lobby and advocacy efforts towards the government.
