Rehabilitation Compass for Inclusion (RCI)

The path to good quality rehabilitation care in Cameroon

Ensuring that the life of every child with a disability in Cameroon is of the highest possible quality. That is the goal of Rehabilitation Compass for Inclusion (RCI), an ambitious, four-year program set up and run by the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Service (CBCHS) and the Liliane Foundation thanks to the financial support of AFAS Foundation.

In Cameroon, an estimated 86% of children and youngsters with a disability do not have access to good rehabilitation care. The country has a structural shortage of this specialized care.

Rehabilitation Compass for Inclusion addresses this problem bottom up, by developing i.a. programs for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) fieldworkers on diploma and Bachelor level. Additionally, a group of talented professionals will be supported to obtain a Master’s degree in physiotherapy and occupational therapy to become the future local teachers, and professional councils will be set up to set and monitor quality standards on a national level.

Results

This approach will lead to:

  • an increased number of trained rehabilitation professionals;
  • a wider range of rehabilitation services;
  • a higher quality of rehabilitation services.

These results will ensure that children and youngsters with a disability, who are growing up in poverty and who need rehabilitation the most, will have access to better rehabilitation care.

In a nutshell

Collaboration

During the course of the project there will be close collaboration with representatives of persons with a disability and national and regional authorities, experienced and accredited training institutes, regional and international federations for physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and local partner organizations.
