Education

Teacher explaining to a studentChildren and youngsters with disabilities are often segregated into special schools. Or they may even be denied education altogether. The Liliane Foundation puts great emphasis on the provision of appropriate education. Education makes the children aware of their talents, their potential and their rights as citizens. It empowers them to take action and stand up for themselves. Education is also an effective tool to end the poverty cycle: it gives youngsters opportunities to access the labour market.

Inclusive education when possible
Together with its partners, the Liliane Foundation promotes inclusive education when the cultural and socio-economic circumstances of the country allow this. In many countries inclusive education is not possible: school buildings are not accessible, teachers lack skills or there are no appropriate teaching resources.

Assistance to special education facilities
When regular schools cannot accommodate children with specific disabilities, such as sensory, language or learning disabilities, special education is a better choice. The Liliane Foundation provides direct contributions to the school fees of individual children. It also supports Partner Organisations in buying educational resources, e.g. study books in Braille. And it provides financial support to establish appropriate educational facilities.

From primary to higher education
When a child finishes primary school, the Partner Organisation enables the student to enrol in vocational training or in regular higher education, depending on the child’s ability.
